LACBA Independent Juvenile Defender Program Seeking Applicants for Attorney and Program Administrator Positions

The Los Angeles County Independent Juvenile Defender Program (IJD) at the Los Angeles County Bar Association is accepting applications for the following positions: (1) Resource Attorney; (2) Appellate Attorney; and (3) Program Administrators.

Resource Attorney: The resource attorney will assist the defense teams by providing augmented advocacy for juvenile delinquency clients with cognitive disabilities and/or mental health diagnoses. The resource attorney will work with the client and service providers to advocate for statutory entitlements such as special education and regional center eligibility. The resource attorney will confer with trial counsel and other members of the defense team to provide the court insight into the client’s disabilities in order to craft an appropriate disposition. The IJD staffs all juvenile delinquency courts in Los Angeles County and handles clients that represent a conflict to the Public Defender and Alternate Public Defender. Applicants should have experience in the juvenile delinquency courts and a working understanding of the juvenile entitlement landscape in Los Angeles County.

Appellate Attorney:  The IJD staffs all juvenile delinquency courts in Los Angeles County and handles clients that represent a conflict to the Public Defender and Alternate Public Defender. The IJD appellate attorney will be responsible for handling writs and certain appellate matters for the IJD panel attorneys. Applicants should have experience in juvenile delinquency courts and extensive experience as appellate counsel in criminal matters.

Program Coordinator:  The IJD is looking for energetic, responsible self-starters who work well in a team environment. Applicants should be comfortable speaking professionally with court personnel, attorneys, clients and their families. Spanish fluency is a plus, but not required. Applicants should also be familiar with the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Word and Excel. Successful candidates will have a bachelor’s degree or well on their way to graduation. Duties will range from secretarial to office administration.

The IJD is a program of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and provides representation for youth charged with crimes in the juvenile delinquency system in Los Angeles County. The LACBA is one of the largest voluntary metropolitan bar associations in the country.
